Three years after the release of the disappointing first person shooter game Aliens: Colonial Marines, one intrepid modder set out to create a version of the game that lives up to its initial expectations.

According to TemplarGFX, the creator of the mod, his version of the game is a “heavily balanced and thoroughly play-tested mod built for exciting, suspenseful and most importantly, fun gameplay.”

While the game received positive hype at expos like PAX and E3, the finished product was so bad SEGA was sued for misleading customers’ expectations, but now TemplarGFX may have brought the world a version of the game the way it should have been based on those early demos.

Upgrades span from shaders and lighting to the core behaviors of the game’s main enemy, the Xenomorphs, which TemplarGFX claims makes them “truly terrifying foes, dramatically shifting the tone of the entire campaign.”

While the original version of the game currently costs $15 on Steam, the mod is free, which may actually make purchasing the game a worthwhile investment.
