Microsoft first party studio Rare's new game Everwild

Microsoft is now ready to focus on releasing first-party titles after recently acquiring several high profile developers.

Speaking at the X019 event, Xbox Game Studios boss Matt Booty told the media that Xbox was now in a position to deliver high quality exclusive games to players. This follows a lengthy period of acquisition where the company has expanded Xbox Game Studios to encompass more than a dozen studios.

“[Xbox] has more games than we know what to do with,” said Booty. “We’ve been shifting our focus inside Xbox Game Studios from acquisition and growth, to a phase of execution and delivery.”

“Recently we got all 15 of our studio heads together in New York City. They came together in a meeting and it was a really humbling and inspiring experience for me, to be with these 15 creative leaders that represent over 300 years of experience with game design and production.”

Over the last few years, Microsoft has added a wide range of developers to its roster. This includes acquiring The Outer Worlds creator Obsidian Entertainment and Psychonauts developer Double Fine. Xbox Game Studios has also set up studios, such as World’s Edge to work on titles like Age of Empires.

That means Xbox users can expect to see lots of new exclusive titles in 2020. Games such as Minecraft Dungeons, Wasteland 3, and Bleeding Edge are all expected to release early next year. Meanwhile, Microsoft’s established studio 343 Industries also has a new title in the form of Halo: Infinite coming in 2020.
