Phil Spencer, the corporate vice president of Microsoft Game Studios, has expressed interest in both free-to-play games and virtual reality for the Xbox One during a fireside chat event at GDC.
The PlayStation 4 has been home to quite a few free-to-play games including Warframe, Blacklight: Retribution and soon Planetside 2, and it seems like Spencer wants to add this business model as well for the Xbox One. When speaking to Gamasutra’s editor in chief, Kris Graft, Spencer stated that he wants to bring the free-to-play format to the console, but they are trying to figure out how to establish a system that doesn’t mislead people into paying too much for each game’s content.
In addition to free-to-play games, Sony is ahead of Microsoft for recently announcing Project Morpheus, a virtual reality headset powered by the Move technology for the PlayStation 4 as the Xbox One has nothing official as of yet. However, the vice president has confirmed that they have “been playing with virtual reality” and he personally thinks it “can be really compelling” when “there are other really immersive games where [players are] actually […] able to completely, both audio and visually, immerse a user in an experience.”
It seems that both free-to-play titles and virtual reality could hit Microsoft’s console. Do you want to see free-to-play and virtual reality on the Xbox One?
