The Protagonist

3Mind Games has officially revealed its debut title, The Protagonist, which is inspired by the narrative structure of Mass Effect and the combat systems of XCOM.

Taking place on an alternate Earth known as Terra, the game casts players as an elite soldier named ANGEL whose mission is to infiltrate and negate the threat posed by the arrival of an alien race. However, this quest does not go as expected, and ANGEL wakes up in the infirmary of the hostile space station, and immediately sets out to rejoin her squad and complete the mission.

Billed as a tactical RPG, The Protagonist features a unique turn-based combat system that allows players to customise and tailor the abilities at their disposal to create combos that can be shared online. Meanwhile, the dialogue system is designed to alter depending on choices made throughout the adventure, which can affect the level of trust that ANGEL’s squad members have in her.

The Protagonist will be the debut project from 3Mind Games,  a Canadian indie outfit comprising of EA and Ubisoft veterans who have worked on a range of franchises including Assassin’s Creed and Far Cry. The narrative designer of the project has also worked on a host of high-profile sci-fi franchises, including Star Wars and Warhammer 40,000.

No platforms have yet been announced for The Protagonist, but the title is currently targeting a release some time in 2019.
