Crystal Dynamics has revealed that Marvel’s Avengers is entirely playable in single-player.

During a live stream on Periscope, lead designer Philippe Therien said, “You can play just about everything by yourself if you want to, but absolutely I would strongly encourage people to gather your friends and go play the game with your buddies.”

He reiterated that “most of the stuff” can be played alone.

Lead producer Rose Hunt spoke about the game’s open world and gameplay. Players have a base of operations that splits off into several multiplayer and single-player levels.

Therien said that the game is too large for a singular open world, so players will explore different environments within different regions. Each character has their own skill tree, and different players may choose to level-up different skills or items.

Hunt revealed that players can customise character costumes, skills, and gear. Levels in the game will have enough replayability for players to return as different characters for a varied experience.

Crystal Dynamics is collaborating directly with Marvel on the “story-driven” game, discussing characters and outfits.

A beta for the game will be available to all players, though PlayStation 4 players will receive access first. New information will be revealed at a later date.

The developer will continue to support the game after launch through the addition of new superheroes and regions at no additional cost.

Finally, Therien and Hunt clarified that the footage shown at Square Enix’s press conference earlier this week was from the pre-alpha version of the game. The developer promises to continue improving elements of the game throughout development.

Marvel’s Avengers will be released for Google Stadia, PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on May 15, 2020.

Rhain discovered a long time ago that mixing one of his passions (video games) with the other (writing) might be a good idea, and now he’s been stuck in the industry for over six years with no means of escaping. His favourite games are those with deep and captivating narratives: while it would take far too long to list them all, some include L.A. Noire, Red Dead Redemption (and its sequel), Wolfenstein: The New Order, The Last of Us, and the Uncharted series.

  1. Welp, looks like another multiplayer heavy game with a short, tacked on single player campaign and gated content for SP. Hope I’m wrong.

    1. It actually sounds as though the co-op content is gated behind single-player progress, which is a rather strange approach. But if that’s the case, then the SP-only content is probably going to be just a tiny portion. Fingers crossed, though!
