Amidst a ton of rumors of a Switch entry in the Luigi’s Mansion series, Nintendo has come out of left field by announcing a remake of the original game for 3DS.
The game has not been given a release date, but instead has been slated for release this year.
Today’s Nintendo direct started off with 3DS headlines delivering rapid fire announcements. A Nintendo Direct would not be complete without at least a couple of sucker punches, though, as the company rounded out the 3DS news with a surprise Luigi’s Mansion remake.
Luigi’s Mansion on 3DS looks nearly identically to the original. The game will mostly remain the same, but Nintendo made sure to announce new features coming packaged in the game, such as a boss rush mode and a new in-game map.
Luigi’s map will be visible on the bottom screen of the 3DS and has been completely reworked from the ground up. An 8-bit Luigi sprite has even been added as a marker for Luigi’s position on the map.
The boss rush mode will test players’ endurance as they fight through only the most powerful specters the game has to offer.
The announcement of this new version of the GameCube classic shows Nintendo is not afraid to continue to show support for the 3DS, even with the Switch’s immense success.
If anything, the reveal is extremely surprising. Recent rumors have pointed to some Luigi’s Mansion news, but a 3DS remake is strange to say the least. Regardless, Luigi fans rejoice, the second-player brother is back for more ghost-busting action.
