Solo indie developer Max Nielsen has admitted that his debut project The Long Return was directly inspired by The Legend of Zelda.

Speaking exclusively to OnlySP recently about level design in The Long Return, Nielsen discussed his sentiments towards the Zelda series. “I am a huge Nintendo fan, Zelda: Ocarina of Time is still my favourite single player game ever.” After which, he explained that he had just finished Breath of the Wild and “wanted to create a world with a similar colour palette and feel.”

The mechanics are reminiscent of older Zelda games, but the game stands apart with its story and themes of an orphaned. Even the colour palette that was inspired by Breath of the Wild feels different thanks to the low poly textures.

The full interview, which will further discuss the inspirations and development of the upcoming title, will be available tomorrow.

The Long Return is set to release this August.
