As part of a recent interview, Warhorse Studios opened up to OnlySP about the issues surrounding the recently released second piece of premium DLC for Kingdom Come: Deliverance, ‘The Amorous Adventures of the Bold Sir Hans Capon’.

Immediately following its October 16 release, the new add-on met with backlash from consumers, being widely criticised for a shortage of content. That lack resulted from a bug that locked some users from accessing a particular quest line, and senior designer Prokop Jirsa explained how the problem came about.

It was an issue that, in the previous version if you successfully completed the quest for The Charlatan—the previous quest, not the quest in the DLC—then he wouldn’t give you the quest in the patched version.”

“It was a combination of more factors, basically, but it was an issue of our quality assurance.” However, Jirsa refused to lay the blame solely at the feet of the testers, saying “That means not only the guys in QA, but even other departments as well, including the designers who should have checked that as well. […] We mostly tested this on the version which we were releasing and, in that version, it was fine.”

The issue arose from unexpected interactions of data in save files from previous versions of the game. Said Jirsa:

“We have released publicly […] maybe 15 or 17 patch releases. In each of those, we have to check—we should check, but we don’t have the capacity to—but we should check every save on each of these versions regarding the next one.”

“You just cannot test every possible combination of how people finished the quests,” added lead designer Viktor Bocan. “Everything worked well—or quite well—and then we released it, and you have like 20 people here testing full-time, and then you release it to millions of people who actually played it.”

The much larger pool of data resulting from public availability meant the team quickly realised the error and set to work on a hotfix that was released on October 24, with later streams showing off the content previous locked away.

“Sometimes we are really ambitious with our game. […] I’m not trying to say it’s not our fault. We should assure the quality, but it’s really hard with a company of our size with this complex of a game,” Jirsa said.

Despite such statements, the team is aware that it must answer to its fanbase and ensure that future releases are up to scratch. In speaking of the upcoming DLC, Bocan said “we will definitely be testing these a little more. […] We don’t want to hurry.”

What is evident from talking to the team members is that they are truly apologetic for the inconvenience caused to die-hard fans of the game and dedicated to ensure that such a disappointment is not repeated.

The next major content release for Kingdom Come: Deliverance will be ‘Band of Bastards’, which currently has no set release date. The developers spoke briefly to OnlySP about the contents of that pack, as well as the final one, ‘A Woman’s Lot’, and those details will be available in our forthcoming full interview with Warhorse Studios.
