After officially shutting its doors in 2014, the studio behind Bioshock and Bioshock Infinite, Irrational Games, has returned with a new mission and a new name: Ghost Story.

This new studio is dedicated to the production of “immersive, story-driven games for people who love games that ask something of them,” and thus retains at least a spiritual link to the Bioshock series. However, coupled with this narrative focus is the desire to “craft experiences where the gameplay is as challenging as the stories,” suggesting a very different approach from the linearity of previous games.

Once again helmed by Ken Levine, Ghost Story currently comprises twelve members of the former Irrational team, but is currently undertaking a recruitment drive, looking for a senior designer and senior level builder, among others.

Although the studio is not yet ready to release specific details of its first game, it is referred to as a “new immersive sci-fi game with RPG elements.” Despite the lack of concrete information on the project, Levine has been vocal about his desire to forge a new direction since Bioshock Infinite, including creating video game experiences that are highly replayable, and has previously mentioned the possibility of a “small open world” and a new design process that he referred to as “narrative Lego“.

OnlySP’s former Editor-in-Chief Lachlan Williams reviewed Bioshock Infinite, scoring it a perfect 10/10, and calling it “a triumph of interactive entertainment [that] will undoubtedly go down as one of the best games of this generation,” before later writing a massive three-part analysis of the game and its ties to its predecessor.

Given the team’s pedigree, whatever Ghost Story is working on is bound to be of keen interest to single-player gamers, and OnlySP will be sure to follow its production. Be sure to bookmark OnlySP and follow us on Facebook and Twitter for all the latest news.
