War of the Chosen

XCOM 2: ‘War of the Chosen’ is reportedly the biggest expansion that Firaxis has even made, with the headline feature being the new boss enemies that give the DLC its name.

Each of the The Chosen is a high-level enemy selected by the ADVENT Elders for their unique skills and abilities to recapture XCOM’s Commander, who will appear multiple times throughout the game’s campaign, growing stronger and gaining additional skills in response to the player’s actions, similarly to Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor’s Nemesis system. Firaxis has recently revealed a series of videos delving into the personalities and abilities of each of the three adversaries.

First of the three is The Assassin, a stealth-based adversary with the ability to turn invisible to sneak up on soldiers. Her primary weapon is a katana, which is capable of taking out high-level units with a single blow, though she also carries an energy weapon and possesses the ability to stun and disorient soldiers with a psionic wave.

Next, The Hunter is a ranged unit capable of traversing the environment at high speed thanks to a grappling hook. Armed with a high-powered sniper rifle, concussion grenades, and a tranquiliser gun, his special ability is to launch a tracking shot that guarantees a hit on the next turn unless players are the targeted until is able to break line of sight.

Finally, The Warlock has advanced psionic powers that give him a huge array of abilities. Chief among his skills is the ability to summon psionic zombies that explode on contact with XCOM soldiers, teleport allies around the battlefield on a whim, and summon guards that make him immune to damage so long as they stand.

The Chosen will try to kidnap XCOM soldiers from the battlefield in order to interrogate them to learn the location of the Avenger, with their ultimate goal being to launch an assault on the base to capture the Commander. Unlike regular enemies, The Chosen cannot be killed in normal skirmishes, with players needing to locate and assault each of their bases in turn. To cope with the advanced skills of these boss enemies, players will have access to a range of new factions, the details of which are available here.

XCOM 2: ‘War of the Chosen’ will be available on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One from August 29.
