An email landed in our Facebook inbox a couple hours ago leading us to a new narrative exploration game called ‘Niten’ and it’s quite beautiful looking.

Developed by Donald Macdonald and his team, the game is built on the Unreal Engine 4 and “is a story driven exploration game experienced through first-person gameplay.” While playing you’ll “uncover the the history of the island and it’s previous inhabitants; a Samurai master and his orphan-child student.”

In search of the past and the present find yourself lost on a remote island off the coast of Japan. Uncover the mystery where ancient Japanese culture meets breathtaking scenery, blossoming cherry trees and a sky that tells a story in its self. Watch the weather turn and see the sun go down, feel the chill of the morning mist and let the glowing fireflies guide you as you search to uncover the truth of the island.

While the game is heavily inspired by Dear Esther, the developers are incorporating more in terms of gameplay than just walking around and listening to audio. After you’ve explored the island, players will be able to customize their own lodge and garden, according to the game’s official website. When exploring the island you’ll be able to find items like foliage and collectible items to decorate the lodge and garden with. After each playthrough players will also be able to “download the story fragments you’ve uncovered as pages of a fully illustrated graphic novel.”

Macdonald is aiming for a November or December release for Niten. The game is currently only planned for a PC release.

You can check out the reveal trailer and first screenshots for the game just below. We’ll of course keep an eye on Niten as the game continues to be developed so stay tuned to our social media channels for further updates. More screenshots and details about the game can be found at Niten’s official website.
