Insomniac Games, best known for the Spyro and Ratchet and Clank franchises, has revealed their next big venture…and it’s really out of left field. The project is called Song of the Deep and it’s a Metroidvania exploration title where you get to pilot a submarine. Here’s what Insomniac has to say about the new project:

Song of the Deep is a metroidvania-style action-adventure game following a young girl’s quest into the unknown to find her missing father. Combining discovery, skill, and suspense with an unforgettable narrative, this underwater journey will challenge players to explore, experiment, and skillfully navigate a vast ocean landscape. Song of the Deep launches on PS4, Xbox One, and PC this summer, 2016.

Insomniac’s Chief Creative Officer Brian Hastings describes a desire to create a female character that is interesting and compelling first rather than beautiful or sexual, a way to show his daughter that, while being happy about her appearance is important, it’s also important to not think of one’s physical appearance first and foremost.

“It was good that she was happy with how she looked, but I didn’t want that to be what she valued most in herself,” Hastings writes. “She’s artistic, smart, kind, funny and resilient. That’s who she is. Those are the qualities I want her to appreciate in herself.

“That got me thinking about games and the kind of heroines we create. Most of our female characters are sexy badasses. Now I happen to love a lot of those characters, and I have no problem with characters being sexy.

“But I wondered if, like my daughter was doing, we sometimes saw the sexiness first and everything else second. At the time I was just starting to work on a new story and I wanted to make a protagonist whose heroism came only from the inside. One who was only heroic because of her character.”

Enter Merryn, Song of the Deep‘s protagonist, a girl trying to find her father who went missing on a fishing expedition.

After a vivid dream showing her father trapped under the sea, Merryn is determined to save him. This unlikely heroine builds a small submarine from spare parts and sets off to rescue him. Along the way, she’ll make friends, discover lost civilizations and ruins, and upgrade her submarine to explore even deeper. The terrain and monsters of the deep are daunting, but Merryn’s courage, intelligence, and love for her father will help her overcome adversity.

“And if you don’t care about any of that stuff, that’s totally cool,” Hastings adds. “You’ll get to pilot a submarine through a beautiful and deadly undersea world that’s full of challenging action and puzzles. There’s a deep progression of abilities and upgrades that you’ll need to master in order to survive. You’ll explore a vast Metroidvania environment, both with your submarine and free-diving.”

Song of the Deep is due out this summer for XBox One. You can find out more about the game on Insomniac Games’ website here and be sure to follow OnlySP on Facebook and Twitter (@Official_OnlySP) for more about this and other single player news as they become available.
