This week we have Tenebrae: Twilight of the Gods by Troglobytes Games; Unavowed by WadJet Eye Games (incidentally the first developer to be featured twice in an Indie Roundup); Keeper & the Soldier by Jump Button Studios; and Shrouded in Sanity by EvolutionRaven.
Tenebrae: Twilight of the Gods (Troglobytes Games)
First up this week is Tenebrae: Twilight of the Gods, a “story-driven, fast-paced 2.5D action/adventure platformer RPG.”
That’s quite a blending of genres you’ve got there, Tenebrae.
Obviously Tenebrae: Twilight of the Gods has a lot going on. The game claims to be paying homage to “early 90’s classics” such as Ghosts ‘n Goblins and various Metroidvania games that were gaining popularity at the time. But the title hopes to bring some fresh twists to that esteemed company thanks to modern day procedurally-generated content.
The massive underworld of Tenebrae is procedurally generated from hand-crafted rooms and gradually unravels before the eyes of the player with its plethora of traps, secrets andhidden treasures while blending with larger, open safe zones.
The game features two distinct points of view and different combat styles between the two main characters. You must choose between melee and ranged weapons “empowered with obscure magic” to beat the game’s host of enemies, including huge bosses. Tenebrae also features non-linear maps that, like any good Metroidvania title, encourage backtracking and replayability.
The game is being developed for Steam, Xbox One and PlayStation 4 on Unreal Engine 4. It is part of Square Enix’s Collective Campaign.
Unavowed (WadJet Eye Games)
We reported on WadJet Eye Games’ previous project, Shardlight in an earlier Indie Roundup here and as that exciting project gets closer to release, WadJet Eye Games has already revealed information about their next project, titled Unavowed.
Unavowed has a dark and intriguing premise. As the game’s main character, you have been possessed by a demon. While that is not particularly untread territory for video games or any media, the game actually picks up sometime later, after your life has been ruined by aforementioned demon.
For six months, you were possessed by a demon. For six months, you unwillingly tore a trail of bloodshed through New York City. Now, finally, you are rescued by the Unavowed – an ancient society dedicated to stopping evil.
You are free, but your world is in tatters. You have no home, no friends, and you are wanted by the police. You can not return to your old life, but perhaps you can start a new one. Join the Unavowed, and learn to fight against the oncoming darkness.
In Unavowed you can choose between a male and female protagonist and one of three playable origin stories. The game features a branching storyline and a choice of five companions that can join you in your quest for redemption.
The game is due out in 2017 but you can track its progress via the links up above or on WadJet Eye’s website here (Unavowed is not yet listed on that website as of the time of writing).
Keeper & the Soldier (Jump Button Studios)
A narrative-driven 2.5 D puzzle platformer currently in development from Jumpbutton Studio about a lonley young girl, destined to live a soldier’s life, who finds something beautiful in a world ravaged by never-ending war.
From this bleak but hopeful premise comes our next game in this week’s Indie Roundup, called Keeper & the Soldier. As mentioned before, Keeper & the Soldier is a 2.5 D puzzle platformer. It features a “rich and beautiful immersive world” and an emphasis on stealth as you make your way “through guarded areas and outwit your foes while wielding powerful abilities and using the environment to your advantage.”
The main character of the game is called EMI23 and the “something beautiful” that she finds is called a “keeper.” She “must recover pieces of an ancient device to save the archives of human history before the Keeper’s exhausted life comes to an end.”
Experience a touching tale of companionship told through two characters with no one left to turn to but each other.
Shrouded in Sanity (EvolutionRaven)
Shrouded in Sanity is our final game of the week. It is a “survival-horror game inspired by Resident Evil 1, Dark Souls, and Eternal Darkness.” With inspirations drawn from Lovecraftian horror, Shrouded in Sanity charges you with a contract to “eliminate the source of the unnatural fog enveloping the Berelai Manor” in an alternate history parallel to our own.
Discover the secrets of the estate, as you look for answers among the violent inhabitants. A strange and repelling madness took hold of the servants roaming the halls, and they will attack on sight, for their madness is one rooted in a deeper understanding of cosmic insignificance.
The game features a bleak and beautiful pixel aesthetic and a focus on exploration as you clear out the horrific eldritch horrors that infect the manor. Combat has you combining attacks with your “laito cane” and your Waltham A9 Handcannon.
And I don’t know about you, but the use the word “handcannon” immediately sells me on a game.
Beware, whatever unearthly events have transpired, your sanity will be tested as the truth unfolds in this hungry all-consuming Fog.
The game has passed through Steam Greenlight (check it out via the link above) and is expected to hit early access soon. Early access is expected to last for approximately a month, meaning the game should be out by early summer.
