In the Valley of Gods

Campo Santo has announced that In the Valley of Gods is now on hold indefinitely whilst the studio works on other Valve projects.

In a statement to Polygon, Campo Santo co-founder Jake Rodkin revealed that the studio’s single-player Ancient Egypt themed game In the Valley of Gods is on hold, and development has ceased. However, he did indicate that the studio could return to the title in the future.

In the Valley of Gods development is on hold—but it certainly feels like a project people can and may return to.”

Additionally, Rodkin confirmed the reasoning behind why the game has been postponed indefinitely, noting that Campo Santo developers have moved to work on other projects across Valve including VR game Half-Life: Alyx and Dota Underlords:

“As we integrated ourselves into Valve it became clear there was a lot of valuable work to be done on Half-Life: Alyx. Some of us starting lending a hand, and have since become full-time on the project as it approaches launch. Similarly, some ex-Campos are working on Dota Underlords.”

However, a former writer for the studio has potentially confirmed suspicions that development on the game has ceased entirely. Duncan Fyfe took to Twitter to author a series of posts stating that “it’s unlikely that I’ll work on it again.”

He further added that he enjoyed working on the title because he felt that the game’s narrative design would challenge the historical racism and misreporting by white explorers of discoveries throughout the 19th and 20th centuries:

“The white western world of the 19th and 20th centuries twisted race science to assert that the Egyptians who actually created all that good stuff were themselves white.” He continued, “This seemed like an important thing to think about in a game about two black women in a world of white Egyptologists.”

Valve acquired Campo Santo back in 2018 around the same time In the Valley of Gods was announced. Furthermore, the game’s Steam page has changed the release date from 2019 to ‘TBD’.
