Halo, being a rapidly expanding gaming series, has explored using many different genres in its iconic universe. Halo Wars was an RTS, Peter Jackson’s cancelled project Halo: Chronicles was probably going to be a point-and-click adventure game. There was even going to be a Halo MMO at one point, which too was cancelled. Now, a revealed game called Halo: Spartan Assault is reaching into top-down shooter gameplay.
Made by a coalition of Vanguard Games and 343 Industries, Halo: Spartan Assault will be exclusive to Windows 8, including PCs, tablet and phones. Using a twin-stick control layout, the player can pick up weapons and use vehicles as well as blasting Covenant troops through 25 missions. This control design will be re-purposed, however, for a Window Phone 8 version. Furthermore, a post-release title update will allow Xbox 360 controller use on Windows 8 tablet and PCs.
The game is set between Halo 3 and Halo 4 during the early days of the Spartan IV programme. Accompanied by a prequel comic, Halo: Spartan Assault seems like it will open a new area of in-game lore for fans to enjoy. The trailer confirms a July release with an estimated price of $6.99.
