Gwent The Witcher Story Campaign Thronebreaker

Gwent: The Witcher Card Game’s story campaign will offer more than a narrative as players will embark on a choice-driven tale.

On the game’s official website, developer CD Projekt Red recently revealed Gwent: The Witcher Card Game’s story campaign ‘Thronebreaker’ and its features. Thronebreaker puts players in the shoes of Meve, the queen of two Northern Realms who knighted Geralt of Rivia, the protagonist of The Witcher series. With the two Northern Realms facing invasion, Meve sets on a journey of “destruction and revenge.”

Thronebreaker features “never before seen parts of The Witcher world” with an explorable top-down handcrafted interactive map. Similar to The Witcher games, Thronebreaker features “thought-provoking side quests” and player-decisions will shape the life of Meve and everyone around her. Principal Writer Jakub Szamalek told PCGamesN that players will decide how Meve treats her subjects. “Throughout the game, we give the players the temptation to push that to the extreme, to be very firm, to be cruel sometimes,” said Szamalek. “You have the choice to go in that direction, and to turn into a ruler that people talk about only in hushed tones.”

The 10-15 hour-long story’s script is the same length as The Witcher 3’s ‘Hearts of Stone’ DLC, said Szamalek.

Alongside custom-made story battles “which twist the game’s rules in wildly unexpected ways,” Thronebreaker features resource management, battle camp customization, and army building with troop recruitment and training. A short gameplay video of the story campaign can be seen here.

Finishing Thronebreaker rewards players with 20 Thronebreaker-inspired cards for use in multiplayer.

Gwent: The Witcher Card Game features an improved card game experience born from The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt’s mini-game. The free-to-play game launches sometime this year for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
