A new report has emerged, suggesting that Google is working on a game console that could “rival PlayStation and Xbox.”
According to sources close to Kotaku, the rumored console will aim to present itself as a streaming platform alongside a new piece of hardware. Additionally, Google is reportedly planning to bring in developers under the Google name by purchasing development studios, thus officially making the technology giant a contender in the ever-evolving video game industry.
As reported earlier this year by The Information, the new platform has been given the codename “Yeti.”
Google has been subject to a litany of video game-related rumors over recent years, but nothing has yet come to fruition. That said, Kotaku’s Jason Schreier writes that his information has been corroborated by five separate sources, so something may indeed be in the air.
In terms of the potential of the platform, one of Schreier’s sources said “Imagine playing The Witcher 3 within a tab on Google Chrome.” This statement is bold, suggesting that the platform would make quite the impact on the industry if true. The Yeti platform is distinct from, yet related to, the company’s hardware, but no real details of the latter have yet been unearthed.
