Godfall already looks like a strong Game of the Year 2020 contender, even though it is due to be released towards the end of this year on the PlayStation 5. Announced at The Game Awards 2019, the teaser trailer showcased sublime visuals with three mean-looking characters donning chrome armour sets.

Godfall is set in a high-fantasy, arcane universe with five different realms: Earth, Fire, Spirit, Water, and Wind. Keith Lee, the creative director of Godfall, revealed the title has drawn inspiration from Brandon Sanderson’s The Stormlight Archive series, Joe Abercrombie’s The First Law series, and Isaac Asimov’s Foundation novels. However, in reality, a game set in a dystopian world with arcane magic and melee combat is certainly not unique. With titles like The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt offering thrilling European/Scandinavian medieval worlds, lore, and replay value, Godfall will need to balance engaging combat with enticing loot drops to distinctly stand out. Luckily, this is where Gearbox Publishing comes in.

Godfall

Godfall will be Gearbox’s first IP within the looter-slasher genre, and the survival of the genre will heavily depend on how the new IP is received. Publisher Gearbox Software has dominated the looter-shooter market with its Borderlands titles for years, with a combination of spectacular cartoon animation, gripping narrative design, thoughtfully designed class-system… and billions of guns. For me, Borderlands 2 and Borderlands 3 have offered intense fast-paced gunfights and original characters. Like so many other fans of the franchise, I was amazed by the antagonist Handsome Jack’s psychopathic rise to become the Hyperion CEO. If anything, I was more concerned that Gearbox might have created too good a villain just as Ubisoft did with Vaas in Far Cry 3.

Furthermore, the main reason I am looking forward to this game is that it is a combination of all my favourite games. Recently, a year-old PC trailer leaked that showcased the title’s gameplay. The epic melee combat was reminiscent of Sony Santa Monica Studio’s God of War’s free-flow combinations, Destiny-esque third-person camera angle, and stunning Diablo-like environments and fascinating enemies. All of these games have contributed to some of my greatest gaming experiences. Therefore, because Godfall is due to come out on the PlayStation 5 and looks like the result of a Large Hadron Collider experiment firing all my favourite games into one ‘Higgs boson’ game, it is one of my most anticipated games of the year.

  1. I feel like saying it’s make-or-break for the entire looter ARPG genre is a tad overly dramatic. It’s definitely going to set the stage, but it’s not like if it fails that Destiny 2, Borderlands 3, Warframe, Anthem, or any number of titles are just going to vanish.

    1. Yeah I was confused as to why that was said.
