Ghost of Tsushima was first revealed at Sony’s Paris Game Week presentation in 2017. Since its announcement, gamers have marveled at the beauty of 13th century Japan. The graphics are absolutely stunning, and the fluid combat showcased in the game’s trailers gives gamers a taste of what wielding a Katana under the samurai code will be like. Ghost of Tsushima has quickly piqued the interest of the gaming community, and is one of our most anticipated games of 2020.
Ghost of Tsushima‘s developer Sucker Punch Productions has had a vast history of action games with PlayStation. Coming from its humble beginnings developing Sly Cooper games, Sucker Punch would go on to create one of the greatest superhero action series Infamous. Following Infamous‘s success, its development team would churn out five successful titles under its banner securing its legacy as the PlayStation 3 era came to a conclusion.
Sucker Punch Productions looked to move on from its previous titles creating an entirely new IP. The development team had years of action open-world experience and would use every bit of it for an ambitious project that no one would see coming. The developers finally revealed their secret project to the world in 2017 taking the gaming PlayStation community by storm. That game showcased would be Ghost of Tsushima.
Ghost of Tsushima is set during the first Mongol invasion. Players control Jin Sakai, the last samurai, in his fight against the occupying Mongol empire. Throughout Jin’s hefty struggle, he begins to master a new fighting style: the way of the Ghost.
Little is currently known about Ghost of Tsushima’s gameplay, but based on the story and era, confrontation and stealth will likely play a major part. Players are given an open world free to explore without guidance. Side quests are available for players to complete, and one-on-one dueling against NPCs is also available for players to fight for their honor.
Gameplay trailers showed how Ghost of Tsushima gives players a blend of hack and slash and tactical combat. Different enemy types require different strategies to overcome. For example, one trailer shows Jin facing off with a group of soldiers. One soldier brandishing a katana is quickly overcome, while one with a spear is taken out with a decisive parry and counter. The mix of strategies players will have to deploy in a fight greatly heightens the tension when facing a group of diverse enemies.
So much potential surrounds Ghost of Tsushima, but so little has yet to be revealed by Sucker Punch Productions. For both its gorgeous graphics and its intense gameplay, Ghost of Tsushima has earned a spot in OnlySP’s most anticipated games of 2020.
