In a story-heavy trailer, preceded by some new iterations of the Gears franchise, Gears of War 5 was announced at Microsoft’s E3 press conference, starring a new, previously unseen, protagonist.
The main character is Kait, a friend of Gears of War 4‘s J.D. Fenix and daughter of Reyna Diaz. The trailer opens in a snowy setting, with Kait mourning the loss of a comrade, before unfolding into mutiny and rebellion.
The trailer then transitions to gameplay, showing off some more arctic locales, complete with vehicles, different modes of traversals, and combat. In particular, some new half-organic, half-synthetic enemies are the highlight.
Gameplay-wise, Gears of War 5 looked particularly smooth, building upon the franchise’s archetypally fluid third-person combat.
