From Software

A new rumour has emerged suggesting Dark Souls and Bloodborne developer From Software will reveal a new Sony-exclusive IP at E3 this year.

A poster on Reddit, citing a “supposed notorious and accurate” source claims that the game, called Phantom Wail, is the Souls-like game that the studio’s president and Bloodborne director Hidetaka Miyazaki has alluded to in previous interviews. However, while the dark fantasy aesthetic will reportedly be familiar, the game is moving away from the Gothic settings of the team’s past work.

Instead, Phantom Wail will adopt Meso-American tribal stylings for its environments. Furthermore, although melee weapons will still be present, they will be of lesser importance here as the game emphasises the use of hand-to-hand combat, with highly customisable fighting styles.

According to the report, the game is being developed in conjunction with Sony Japan Studio, which also previously supported From Software with Demon’s Souls and Bloodborne.

Although the prospect of Phantom Wail is tantalising, and an E3 announcement has the precedent of the 2014 reveal of Bloodborne, the rumour is, at present, unverified and uncorroborated, meaning that fans of From Software should, perhaps, not get too excited just yet.

E3 2017 will run from June 13-15, with Sony’s press conference set to take place on June 12. Be sure to check back with OnlySP then for all the updates emerging from the show.
