Freja and the False Prophecy

A gorgeous hand-drawn Metroidvania called Freja and the False Prophecy hits Kickstarter with a playable demo.

Developed by a brand new South African indie studio called Unsigned Double Collective, Freja and the False Prophecy promises an epic storyline, thrilling combat, and a heavy focus on narrative and world-building. The tiny team has chosen the nine realms of Norse mythology as the backdrop for Freya’s adventure, and a brand new Kickstarter trailer shows off the gorgeous hand-drawn environments and fast-paced gameplay.

Players still on the fence will be pleased to know that the team has prepared a small pre-alpha demo, giving prospective backers a chance to sample the goods before committing. Check out a demo on the game’s Kickstarter page. Intriguingly, the team says Freja and the False Prophecy will offer a fair but challenging experience, as well as a separate Story Mode option for players who just want to experience the narrative.

The husband and wife team of lead developer and concept artist, Lasse and Romy highlight games like Dark Souls, Ori and the Blind Forest, Hollow Knight, King’s Quest, Divinity Original Sin, Limbo, and Stardew Valley as inspiration. However, the developer is quick to note that Freya will be more than just the sum of its parts and that it will stand out in its own way.

“An epic story, awesome and satisfying combat and a strong, independent (although vulnerable in many ways), non-stereotypical female protagonist all thrust into this amazing world of Norse Mythology. said, Romy speaking to Coffee Break. “At least, this is our goal, to take a lot of cool concepts and bundle them together.”

Unsigned Double Collective is seeking $22,563 to fund development, and the team hopes to have the game in the hands of backers by January 2022. Freja and the False Prophecy is in development for PC, with Switch, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One stretch goals. Players can back the project on Kickstarter.
