It’s finally here. After a six month delay, Watch_Dogs is available on PS4, PS3, Xbox One, Xbox 360 and PC, and Ubisoft is seeing staggering success with the game. But what about you, the player? If you need some tips on how to succeed in Ubisoft’s version of Chicago, you’re in the right place. Check out these five ways to get ahead in Watch_Dogs.

Oh, and, by the way, this guide is completely free of story spoilers, so go forth with no fear!

1. Hack the bank accounts of civilians.

If you want the top of the line weapons, if you want new outfits and if you want extra crafting material, you’ll need money! Hacking bank accounts is the easiest way to get that money.

Easy money.

While strolling down the street you’ll notice that you have the option to hack the bank accounts of some civilians. These hacks usually net you anywhere between $800 and $5000 a pop, with some going above that  and “rich” bank accounts providing over $10,000 each. You then simply head to an ATM and withdraw the hacked funds, and enjoy!

2. Be a good citizen.

I know I know, I just told you to steal from people’s bank accounts; what kind of “good citizen” does that? Well you can still be one, because, hacking bank accounts doesn’t affect your in-game morality meter but might affect your personal morality meter if you decide to rob a cancer patient. Anyway, if you intervene in street crimes such as assaults, and avoid running over civilians or intentionally harming them, your morality meter will move to the right (the “good” side of the meter). This is beneficial for multiple reasons, a few of which are listed below:

  • Civilians are less likely to call the police if you take their vehicles or openly carry a firearm.
  • If you have a “bad” reputation, civilians on the street may recognise you and call the police.
  • If you have a “bad” reputation, store owners are likely to recognise you when you shop there and either deny you service or sound an alarm to summon the police.

It’s basically real life. Be nice to people and you’ll go places.

3. Focus primarily on the “hacking” section of the skill tree.

This is an important one. The police and other enemies can be ruthless when they are in pursuit of you, and without the right hacks, it can be hard to escape. In the early stages of the game, when all I could do was hack traffic lights, I admittedly faced difficulty in evading persistent police and enemies. So I decided to focus my skill points primarily into the hacking branch of the skill tree, a great decision that I recommend to others.

If you do this, you’ll be able to raise bridges, road barriers, road spikes, steam pipes and more before you know it. Getting away from pursuing enemies becomes a breeze compared to the earlier stages of the game, and while it can still be challenging, it’s certainly easier than not being able to utilize these hacks. Not to mention that you can put these hacks to use against enemies that are on foot and giving you grief.

Hacks such as barriers will make evading enemies much easier.

4. Be stealthy.

In Watch_Dogs, you can be stealthy or run in guns blazing. While firefights in the game are a lot of fun and I encourage participating in them for some missions, stealth can definitely make things easier for you. Some strongholds such as the ctOS Stations can be infiltrated and hacked to give you access to ctOS in that region, without stepping foot in the compound. You can hack some cameras, use those to spy and hack some distractions, and make it to the objective without being seen or firing a single bullet. If you’d rather be more upfront in your stealth tactics, you can do that too! Equip a silenced handgun and get to work. Some of the missions are easier to progress through if you can handle being a little bit sneaky, as Aiden only takes a few bullets before it’s lights out.

5. Use your environment.

Finally, use the highly-hackable-environment to your advantage. As well as the hacks that aid you in your driving escapades, you can also raise barriers for cover, cause junction boxes to explode, gain an aerial advantage by taking a construction lift to a balcony or roof and more. These hacks can give you that leg-up in combat to help you overcome your enemies and progress further into the game. Use the environment and your enemies will fall before you.

Bonus. 6. Complete all of the side activities.

This is a bonus point because it technically wont help you “get ahead” in Watch_Dogs other than providing you with some extra cash. But I cannot stress just how much there is to do in Ubisoft’s version of Chicago. The side missions will really flesh out the experience for you, and what’s more, they are FUN! (minus a select few which cause frustration, but these are few and far between). From vehicle chases to privacy invasions to gang hideouts and even digital trips and more, there is plenty to have fun with.

I hope you found this guide helpful, and I certainly hope you’re enjoying, or will enjoy, the game as much as I did. Let me know what you think of the game and if this guide helped you in the comments below, and for more on Watch_Dogs, Ubisoft, and all things single player, keep visiting OnlySP.
