Square Enix has released the first DLC for Final Fantasy XV featuring Noctis’ guardian/brother-in-arms, Gladiolus Amicitia.
The latest jewel in the famed franchise, Final Fantasy XV today officially received its very first DLC. ‘Episode Gladiolus’ puts the spotlight on the eponymous character, affectionately called Gladio by his Noct and his closest friends. During the ship repair section of the main campaign of Final Fantasy XV, Gladio disappeared for a while to attain strength worthy of protecting the Chosen King Noctis , returning in Lestallum’s power plant section.
His activity and whereabouts during that timespan are unknown beyond a vague “he was busy hunting” excuse. This DLC episode comes in with an explanation for the lost time, pitting players as the greatsword-and-shield-wielding brother bear of yore.
In the ancient ruins that were found in the Kingdom of Lucis 30 years ago, the spirits of heroes that once served the king await the next generation of warriors.
Gladiolus parts ways with his entourage and meets up with Cor, the sole survivor of the trials. Now, with his mentor at his side, Gladiolus sets out to challenge the Shield of the Founder King: the Blademaster, Gilgamesh.
In sharp divergence from the warp-strike-heavy approach of Noctis, Gladio’s playstyle depends on defense, placing strategy over raw power in the form of blocking then counterattacking. Make no mistake, however, that Gladio is still the strongman of the group even while flying solo. Players will need to effectively utilize his Valor and Rage system while taking on opponents in both unexplored and new as well as familiar locales in Eos.
Following completion of the episode, players will be able to carry over certain special items to the main game, as well as complete the main campaign in two new gameplay modes called Score Attack and Final Trial.
In addition to the DLC episode, Square Enix also released a free main game update with several improvements and new content. The pain of drudging through Chapter 13 is now alleviated by different perspectives and even an alternative path, as well as cutscenes that better bridge the confusion of the chapter. The Ring of the Lucii also now has enhanced magic, although it remains to be seen if said magic is more offensive or defensive, or a balance of both. Finally, more areas are also now available to visit in Eos.
Final Fantasy XV centers around the Crown Prince of the Kingdom of Lucis, Noctis Lucis Caelum. After elearning of news of the death of his father and his and his fiancee’s supposed murders at the hands of the imperial Niflheim empire, Noctis must forego his preconceptions of a happy wedding with the love of his life as part of a war treaty in exchange for fulfilling his role as The Chosen King. Players must reclaim their throne and bring back light to a daemon-filled dark world on the Playstation 4 and/or Xbox One.
The base game earned a very respectable Distinction when OnlySP’s DJ Arruda reviewed it earlier this year.
Final Fantasy XV ‘Episode Gladiolus’ is now available for the Playstation 4 and Xbox One as either a standalone download purchase or as part of the Season Pass.
