The remake of the hugely popular Final Fantasy VII has undergone a massive change in development structure, according to Gematsu.
The project is no longer receiving help from external partners. Instead, Square Enix’s internal development team will be leading the charge on the game’s production. Moreover, Haoki Hamaguchi—lead programmer for Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII—has taken over development of the FFVII Remake. Regarding the developmental shift, Hamaguchi had the following to say:
“The information is already available online, but I’ve taken charge on the development side for Final Fantasy VII Remake,” Hamaguchi said. “As for the whole story, (it’s a sensitive topic, but) until now, development was moving forward with external cooperation, but the company has decided to shift to an internal setup, including mass production and quality, because we want to control everything, including quality, on a stable schedule. (I won’t be leaving Mobius Final Fantasy.)”
Final Fantasy VII’s remake has been heavily anticipated since rumors of the game surfaced in 2014. The project was officially announced in 2015 at Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3). The remake will be a multi-game release. The reason for the multi-game release is that Square Enix could not fit the game into a single release without cutting large parts of the game’s planned content. By dividing the game into multiple parts, Square Enix is able to give players access to areas in the game that were inaccessible in the original Final Fantasy VII, which released in 1997. While players might be worried that the multi-release schedule will make each game feel unfinished, Square Enix plans for each game to be similar in scale to Final Fantasy XIII.
