FFXIV: A Realm Reborn‘s director Naoki Yoshida came out to confirm that the latest Final Fantasy MMO isn’t coming to any of Microsoft’s consoles due to the restrictive online policies that prevent cross-platform interaction. The MMO will be featured on the PS3, PS4 and PC, and players can interact with each other despite their platform of choice.
Yoshida said “One player might be on the PC version, another might be on the PS4 and I’m on the Xbox – but we’re not able to join the same game servers. That is just… I just don’t like the idea. I disagree with it… there are now so many mobile devices, smart phones, everything – why would you ever just stick to one platform from the hardware aspect? Just make it open to everyone”.
As well as not being able to interact cross platform, existing players wouldn’t be able to use their previous character on the new and improved game. Yoshida brings up a very good point as to why such popular and large games would have exclusive console servers instead of allowing for cross platform playing.
Let us know how you feel below. Has Microsoft hit another major screw up? Or should games not allow cross platform interaction?
