Fallout 76

Following Bethesda’s shock Fallout 76 announcement, early rumours have circulated that the project will likely be online-only, betraying the series’s single-player roots.

A litany of rumours from unverified sources have flooded social media, with Kotaku stating that its sources suggest that 76 will be an online, survival-focused RPG akin to DayZ or H1Z1.

The sources, who are apparently “speaking anonymously so as not to damage their careers,” strongly reiterated that 76 will be an experimental affair for Bethesda. The rumours imply that the title’s inception came from a prototype of an online mode for Fallout 4.

An online game does not mean Bethesda will be going against its design instincts, however. 76 will contain the classic Fallout quest and story set-up, with a large focus on Fallout 4‘s base-building mechanic. Gameplay is likely to be “rapidly changing,” translating to a Fallout title that fully subscribes to the “games as a service” model.

Interestingly, some of the game will be developed at Bethesda’s Austin studio, which was formerly known as BattleCry Studios. That studio, prior to the Bethesda merge, had been working on an online game entitled BattleCry before it was cancelled.

76 is named after Vault 76, which has been established in the Fallout canon since Fallout 3. That vault opened 20 years after the nukes fell, compared to the normal opening time of 200 years for other vaults. As a result, Vault 76 were the first dwellers to experience the nuclear consequences, shouldering the burden to re-build and re-integrate into the remnants of society.
