Kinda figured this was coming, but we now have an official confirmation that Fable Legends will be a free 2 play title on both the Xbox One and PC.

According to Kotaku UK, the game will include a “story’s worth” amount of content, with more to come every few months via an episodic format. There will be a total of 8 characters to use in the game, with 4 available at a time. The characters will rotate every two weeks, or you can pay to unlock them permanently. Villain characters will also follow the same format as the regular/Hero characters.

Everything gameplay related can only be earned by playing the game, according to Kotaku’s article, which by their wording confuses me a bit. I’m going to assume they mean XP, weapon upgrades and things like that to keep the game balanced and avoid it becoming a pay 2 win title.

Lionhead is hoping to pave the way for free 2 play titles on consoles by doing it the “right” way and showing that a big budget title can successfully use the model. It’ll be interesting to see how everything turns out when the game releases later this year.
