FromSoftware has spoken about its upcoming collaboration with George R. R. Martin, Elden Ring.

In an interview with Xbox Wire, director Hidetaka Miyazaki revealed that the third-person action RPG will focus on role-playing elements, unlike Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, which focused on action.

“Of course, we are not shying away from the fun of responsive melee-based combat, and these elements will be present as well.”

Miyazaki said that the game will provide players with a “wide variety of weapons, magic, and ways to engage enemies, that make it possible to provide users with a style of gameplay and strategy that suits them.”

He felt that Elden Ring will provide more variety for the player than the Dark Souls series.

Miyazaki revealed that the game will feature character customisation, allowing “players to design and control their own unique character.”

Regarding the collaboration with George R. R. Martin, Miyazaki cited Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire and Tuf Voyaging book series as some of the best, but noted that Fevre Dream was his favourite.

“I personally see Fevre Dream as a masterpiece among vampire fantasy and had even previously recommended it to all new employees,” said Miyazaki.

OnlySP recently discussed what a FromSoftware Game of Thrones title could look like, but also discussed the possibility of Martin’s other work.

Miyazaki felt that the biggest difference between Elden Ring and Dark Souls is the former’s open world.

“The scale of the world and its narrative, as well as the depth and freedom of exploration have increased dramatically. It is without a doubt our biggest title yet in terms of sheer volume.”

A collaboration between Miyazaki and Martin was rumoured last month, with a leak earlier this week introducing the game’s art and information. Microsoft officially revealed the title during its press conference this morning; it will be coming to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Rhain discovered a long time ago that mixing one of his passions (video games) with the other (writing) might be a good idea, and now he’s been stuck in the industry for over six years with no means of escaping. His favourite games are those with deep and captivating narratives: while it would take far too long to list them all, some include L.A. Noire, Red Dead Redemption (and its sequel), Wolfenstein: The New Order, The Last of Us, and the Uncharted series.
