Need for Speed

EA has begun to peel back the curtain of its upcoming Need for Speed, after confirming that it will arrive this year.

Following the statement earlier this year that the game will return to the cops vs racers fantasy that players associate with the franchise, community manager Ben Walke has confirmed that customisation will feature prominently in the title.

Writing on the EA Answers HQ blog, Walke wrote “You could say that the cars and customization of NFS are the beating heart of what we do. Without either of these, NFS fails to exist as we know it. These two elements play a pivotal role in the series and are two aspects that we consider to be foundational, meaning they aren’t going anywhere because NFS wouldn’t exist without them.”

He also revealed that the game will not have an E3 presence, as has historically been the case, saying that the team is focused on “deliver[ing] a truly memorable high-speed entry” rather than preparing for media events. Walke does add, however, that the game will get a full unveiling later this year when the team heads south.

Given that Walke and Ghost Games—the team most likely (though not officially announced) to be leading the project—are based in Sweden, that allusion probably refers to either Develop:Brighton in July or, more likely, Gamescom towards the end of August.
