Reverting back to the traditional exclusivity of Dynasty Warriors titles for PlayStation, the latest issue of Famitsu has revealed that Dynasty Warriors 9 will only be available on PlayStation 4.

With Dynasty Warriors 8 and its expansion, Dynasty Warriors 8: Empires, the popular hack-and-slash franchise became available for Xbox 360 and Xbox One. Select titles in the franchise were made available for PC over time, but the series initially clung to Sony PlayStation consoles for majority of its existence. With the newest installment, Dynasty Warriors 9, the series is returning to launching solely on Sony’s popular system, PlayStation 4. Whether the title will become available for PC and Xbox One at a later date remains a mystery.

No official release date for Dynasty Warriors 9 has been announced, but the title is considered a rebirth for the series, particularly with the shift to open-world gameplay. The combat system is getting a major overhaul as well. In addition, all playable characters from Dynasty Warriors 8: Empires will be available in Dynasty Warriors 9, plus some new characters (Zhou Cang and Cheng Pu).

In addition, new mechanics are being implemented. The State Combo system, for example, allows players to react accordingly to evolving situations. The system begins with a trigger attack. The trigger attack is then followed by a series of attacks that can change depending on the state of the enemy. At the end of the chain, a strong attack finishes off an opponent.

Interactive environments make their debut in the Dynasty Warriors series, too. Players can use grappling hooks to climb up mountains or castle walls, for example.

These announcements come after a Twitter post by Koei Tecmo stating that more Dynasty Warriors 9 details will be coming in the month of May. Hopefully, the new information is the beginning of a trend, with Omega Force and Koei Tecmo continuing to provide updates throughout the month.
