Today, Capcom announced October 3, 2017 as the release date for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One ports of the critically-acclaimed action role-playing game Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen.

Directed by Hideaki Itsuno (Devil May Cry 2–4), Dragon’s Dogma is a third-person, open-world ARPG that originally saw release in May of 2012. Receiving a warm reception in both Japan and the Western world, the game sold 92,000 units within its first five days on the US market. Sales of Dragon’s Dogma reached over a million copies by June 2012, a mere month after release.

Critics praised Dragon’s Dogma for its challenging combat encounters, grand design scale, and atmospheric touches. Reviews lauded a unique combat mechanic in which the player can grab onto enemies, and even climb on top of gargantuan foes to hack away at different parts of their bodies. While the game’s vast, open world drew comparisons to Bethesda’s Elder Scrolls titles, Dragon’s Dogma also received some criticism for lacking polish, as well as low frame rates on the Xbox 360 version.

In 2013, Capcom released an expanded version of the game for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, titled Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen. This expansion gave players a new zone to explore, all downloadable content intended for the original release, a much-requested fast travel system, additional quests, and more. By September of 2015, combined sales of Dragon’s Dogma and the ‘Dark Arisen’ expansion reached over two million units, with ‘Dark Arisen’ named as the fastest-selling Capcom game for Windows.

The PlayStation 4 and Xbox One ports of the game coming this October contain the original Dragon’s Dogma and expansion content, including the Bitterblack Isle area, where players can find challenging new enemies, items, weapons, and armor sets.
