Diablo IV

During Saturday’s Diablo IV BlizzCon panel covering systems and features, Blizzard took time to discuss some of the finer details that will set Diablo IV apart from past Diablo games.

One of the more notable announcements was that Diablo IV will be conscious of the single-player experience, something that fans were highly critical of Diablo III for failing at.

Mega-popular Diablo III content creator CJ ‘Rhykker’ Miozzi was in attendance and live-tweeted the panel, writing, “All best content also available for solo play.” He also noted the existence of clans, a multiplayer element of the game, which can provide benefits even during solo play.

Although “best content” is vague, a major weak point of Diablo III was that seasonal progression was heavily skewed in favor of large groups of players.

  1. I really like the look of the game and the features they’ve shared. I played Diablo when it was released. I still play random seasons of Diablo 3. I’m glad you quoted Rhyyker, he is a long term icon of the community. That said, if Blizz puts in microtransactions, even cosmetic, I may just skip this. I am done trusting Activision.

    1. On the note of MTX, I think you’ll end up disappointed!

Rhykker is definitely a good dude—I hope he’s still around when D4 finally releases. He’s probably the best all-around D3 content creator. He’s also been providing really valuable information from the con.

  2. if there is no singleplayer option. Solo doesnt count as your still online surrounded by potential idiots, why should i bother buying this at all.
I didnt play Diablo 1 and 2 for the bullshit MP, i played it for the story and lore/Campaign. Blizzard keeps failing to listen to its hardcore base. The only people they apparently listen to are the ones only played Diablo 3 or WoW..

    1. By the way it’s being described, this solo mode will work as it does in Conan Exiles and even other live service games like Rage 2 in that you can choose to be in a private server without other people around you. It’s online for the dynamism of world event, but not multiplayer.

      1. Excuse my intrusion, but is there any confirmation that we’ll be able to play the game without seeing other players around? The sources I have found are contradictory on this point.

        1. There is. The very first press release from Blizzard confirms that the game will “fully support solo […] play.”
The messaging is messy, but the official word is that Solo Mode means Solo Mode.

      2. I dont PLAY Conan Exlies or Rage 2. Why do they keep fucking it up lately. Everyone i hear keeps blabbing ” Solo means you can still play alone”. NO. It means you are still surrounded by fucking morons that can ruin your experience. Look at Fallout 76, Bethesda fucking lied about keeping singleplayer alive. I dont want to kill the boss with others, i want to do myself like i did with Diablo 2 Lord of Destruction.

        1. Except the games I used as examples and Blizzard’s phrasing below strongly suggest that won’t be the case. In Conan Exiles and now Rune 2, you’re in a private server with no-one else around you. I repeat, there are no other players around you, and you battle bosses entirely solo.

But you seem hellbent on being angry about this, so I’m not gonna bother with the demonstrable facts any further.

          1. AFAIK this is AB’s explanation regarding the feature according to Gamespot’s report:

“We are not going to support an offline mode. But as I said before, nothing in Diablo 4 is going to require partying up. You can play solo and dungeons are private. Campaign quest areas will remain private.”

By saying dungeons and campaign quest areas remain private while the rest of the game “supports solo play”. It can be safely assumed that the open world areas will still be populated by other players.

Despite how aggressive and angry @@williamfleetwood:disqus ‘s comments sounded, his point remains – None of the facts available so far support the theory of the possibility of a 100% private, solo experience (as if you’re playing diablo 2 without internet, or diablo 3 with global chat/social features turned off).

My take on this is: While the game supports solo play and nothing in the game absolutely requires a group, a sizable chunk of the game will still feature other online players and it does not seem like it’s something we can opt-out of.
