Running with the premise of games such as Black & White, Godhood is a strategy game that tasks players with the day-to-day business of being a deity.

Developed by the aptly named Abbey Games, the title matches a simple isometric perspective with a deep dogma system.

Players are expected to not only create their own religion, but combat other deities, manage their followers, and guide the lives of their flock. The developer has stated that players can only guide—not force—their disciples, with key decisions such as rituals, monuments, and abilities having substantial knock-on effects.

As a deity, the player will run into rival dogmas as their tribe matures, which they will have to face in skirmishes known as Sacrements. The religion’s followers will need to display faith through the use of awe, persuasion, or force.

By Godhood‘s nature as a strategy game, it will have significant replayability. The developer, however, has made a concerted effort to maximise the game’s replay potential, with the title having dozens of religious combinations, as well as an open-ended story riddled with secrets.

OnlySP sat down with the studio in 2013 to talk about the perils of indie development, where Abbey described its fondness for the “God game” subgenre.
