Outward, developed by German-based developer Nine Dots Studios, is to be published by a joint partnership between Deep Silver and Maximum Games.

Posited as an action RPG, Outward seeks to prove that games can nail the open-world format on budget. The developer stands at a meagre ten members, which speaks volumes for the project’s humble scale. Despite a relatively small studio size, the title has strongly defined systems and, according to the trailer, an impressive map size.

Nine Dots is used to stretching itself financially, however. On the day of launch for its last game, God Factory, the studio ran out of money. Speaking to VentureBeat, founder Guillaume Boucher-Vidal spoke on the studio’s financial ethos:

“I’ve always been against working hard, I’m for working smart. Even though it was really stressful financially, even though we were always in a live or die situation, we never crunched. That’s something that’s really important to me. We always have some semblance of a work-life balance.”

Now with advanced backing, Outward will hopefully catapult the developer to some semblance of financial security. The trailer, embedded below, details a game that looks entrenched in classical RPG tropes, whilst keeping its map design and systems modernised:

Outward will be available on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on February 12, 2019. For more on the game and the world of single-player, be sure to follow OnlySP on FacebookTwitter, and YouTube.
