Buried amongst yesterday’s unveiling of Recompile was the reveal of a new publisher contributing to the AA revival: Dear Villagers.
Despite the new name, Dear Villagers is, in fact, a rebranding of indie publisher Playdius (Edge of Eternity; Bury Me, My Love) to reflect a shift in direction. Historically, the team has taken a scattershot approach to the games it handles, but that is changing henceforth.
Notably, the company is splitting. Dear Villagers will focus on console and PC games, while the newly created Plug In Digital will handle mobile-oriented titles.
In a GamesIndustry.biz interview, Dear Villagers’s head of publishing Guillaume Jamet expanded on the team’s mission:
“We’re not focused on one particular genre—that’s not our strategy right now. If you look at a game like Edge of Eternity, that’s the kind of game we’re looking for: indie games that reach for higher, maybe AA-style games.”
Recompile was just the first new game set to be unveiled by the team, with the full interview suggesting that more are set to come by the end of this week.
The rebranding comes with an increased budget that should help Dear Villagers games reach a wider audience than has been the case previously.
