If you read our Dark Souls 2 review, you would notice that despite delivering a truly spectacular experience, I noted that the game ended up being a disappointment in the graphics department compared to what Namco Bandia had been promising prior to release. In a joint statement from Namco Bandai and From Software, the reason behind this was explained.
According to the statement, the game was constantly being readjusted to help make a balance between good graphics and gameplay. Ultimately, the graphics were toned down to help make the gameplay even better, which was certainly the right call for a game like Dark Souls 2. Would you rather a beautiful game but with a stuttering framerate that was likened to Blighttown from Dark Souls?
However, according to Forbes, an insider source revealed that the early builds of the game were “focusing heavily on delivering a top-notch experience on PC and underestimated the challenges the new systems would pose on PS3 / Xbox360.” So could this ultimately mean that the PC version will have those visuals we’ve expected from the initial Dark Souls 2 reveal? Despite all this, Dark Souls 2 is still a fantastic game but it does give more reason as to why developers should hold off on showing gameplay that is technically unstable.
