Capcom is kicking off their celebration of the 25th anniversary of Mega Man (which will run through 2013) with the release of Rockman Xover, an iOS game that will homage to the series that has come before. It’s a perfectly valid path for the publisher to take, given the rise of mobile gaming, but a lot of fans are still resentful that the property has otherwise been left to languish for the better part of three years, which has also included the cancellation of the much anticipated Mega Man Legends 3. Those fans may be at least somewhat assured by the words of Capcom’s Senior Vice President, Christian Svensson. Speaking to Nintendo Power magazine (cited by fansite Rockman Corner) he hinted at the return of the character to the core market:

I can say with certainty that you’ve not seen the last of the Blue Bomber on consoles and handhelds, and, with luck, we’ll be celebrating his 50th anniversary, including all of the games you’re going to enjoy over the next 25 years. That said, an issue we’ve had in the past has been talking about games and announcing them before we’re certain they’re going to come out, which unfortunately has lead to profound disappointment for many fans. So for now, I’m going to have to stay mum about any details.

It clearly implies that at least one product is already in the works, so don’t be surprised if an announcement is made next year as part of the celebrations. We’ll keep you updated on the status of the future of Mega Man as time goes on, so stay tuned to OnlySP.
