According to developer Infinity Ward, the newest game in the Call of Duty franchise, Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, will feature both on-rails sections and open dogfighting arenas.

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare will take place sometime in the future and will feature missions both set on Earth and in a series first, space.

In an interview with Forbes, Infinity Ward Design Director Jacob Minkoff explained that players will be able to engage in various forms of air combat throughout the campaign.

“There are open dogfighting arenas with full freedom of flight in all directions, where you will take part in battles against capital ships and enemy fighters, as well as exciting on-rails attack runs,” says Minkoff. ‘

Players will also get to take control of a futuristic fighter jet called the Jackal. The aircraft will be used during various battles during the campaign. Featuring both on-rail vehicle fights and open arena dog fights in space. The Jackal will also be used to travel to various optional missions.

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare will also feature combat that utilizes various gadgets to allow soldiers to fight in zero-g environments. Some of which was shown in the games now infamous reveal trailer.

“As a SCAR, a spec-ops soldier trained to fight in space, you have the use of a grapple and RCS thrusters on your suit,” says Minkoff. “These allow you to quickly cross open spaces and get cover. Once you find a good vantage point, you have mag-boots that allow you to lock onto surfaces no matter which way they are oriented.”

It will be interesting to see how space combat will work seeing how this is the first time a Call of Duty game will feature it. It’s a risky move for the veteran franchise, but hopefully, it will pay off in the long run and freshen up the series a bit.

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare comes out on November 4 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
