Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare might have a single player campaign that’s actually worth paying attention to this year.

According to Glen Schofield, the Creative Director on Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, the game’s story has taken over 2 1/2 years to write. Considering that development cycles for past Call of Duty games lasted only two years, compared to three years for Advanced Warfare, that may be a good sign of things to come on the single player side of things.

Studio Cofounder Michael Condrey has also previously sated in a Gameinformer interview that they want the game to be on par with scenes like the Red Wedding from Game of Thrones. Condrey explains, “Our goal as entertainers is to deliver a Red Wedding scene through interactive entertainment, and have people talk about Call of Duty on that sort of level one day,”

Schofield added to Condrey’s statement saying, “It’s not just about the big moments; it’s about the emotional moments, and they can still be big and bold, but it’s to me, right now…at this point in our career and I think in video games, with the new consoles and the amount of fidelity you get with the characters, it’s about emotional connections. Narrative is extremely important to us. Not that it isn’t to others, but we pay an awful lot of attention to that.”

Sledgehammer sounds like it has its sights set on making a strong campaign for Advanced Warfare. With Kevin Spacey involved, as well as other big names like Troy Baker, that should signal at least some of their intentions. We’ll just have to wait and see if Sledgehammer can deliver, but color me excited that they’re putting a strong focus on the campaign in a Call of Duty game this time around.

  1. 2 and a half years to write the story? I’m sorry, but did anyone else catch that waft of bullshit? You penned it in a month or two, tops, the game, even less. Don’t exaggerate, it’s obvious when you do it.

    1. Damn that cynicism is hilarious “Waft of BS” LOL

      1. When it comes to Activision products it always feel like they’re trying to wave their fart over in hopes we’ll throw money at them to make it go away.

    2. Or they could just be lazy.

      1. If I was a betting man.

  2. Why do they waste so much time on the story?

Just pull of a Warhawk/Titanfall, and make CoD multiplayer-only.
Imagine all the additional content we could have, without that damn single-player campaign clogging our blu-ray discs.

    1. cuz COD used to have a decent story like the original modern warfare

  3. Black ops 2 had good narrative, so i can hope for more.
