The Call of Duty game in 2020 reportedly will be Call of Duty: Black Ops 5.

According to Jason Schreier at Kotaku, Treyarch will be heading development for 2020’s iteration of the annual blockbuster franchise with Sledgehammer and Raven Software as support. Its publisher, Activision, currently has a three year cycle with its studios, Infinity Ward, Sledgehammer, and Treyarch, with Sledgehammer previously positioned to release a game in 2020. In 2018, Treyarch released Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, and this year, Infinity Ward is rumored to be releasing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4.

According to Schreier’s sources, Sledgehammer’s 2020 game takes place during the Cold War and involves Vietnam. Now, Treyarch will be repurposing the work that Sledgehammer has done so far on the single-player mode and turn it into a campaign for Black Ops 5. This is interesting to note, as Black Ops 4 lacked a single-player campaign, opting to add in Blackout instead, a battle royale mode.

Schreier’s report also suggests that the game will most likely be cross-generation to take advantage of the predicted releases of the next PlayStation and Xbox.

Additionally, Activision executives are toying with the idea of going free-to-play, with the report saying that “once anathema to the publisher—and, three sources say, are looking into offering a free-to-play component for this year’s new Modern Warfare, although the specifics may not be finalized yet. Some within Activision have remained resistant to the idea.” If a free-to-play model proves to be a success for 2019’s Call of Duty, then Black Ops 5 could very well follow the same route.

With Treyarch leading in 2020, the three-year cycle that Activision has set since 2012 is now broken.
