Surviving Mars

Surviving Mars, a new city-building sim from the developers of the Tropico series, was announced at PDXCON2017 this past weekend.

As the name implies, Surviving Mars will transplant the typical challenges of city management to the Red Planet, which introduces a whole suite of new challenges, including ensuring oxygen supplies and dealing with the planet’s notorious sandstorms. In this respect, the game will carry elements more typical of survival games, adding a new wrinkle to proceedings. In addition to this, publisher Paradox Interactive has also announced that the title will incorporate sanity mechanics, as poor quality of life and other issues will lead to the degeneration of colonists’ minds.

The unique setting throws up a range of potential challenges for gameplay, particularly through the idea that colony growth should not necessarily be the main barometer of success. The exact player goals, however, besides forming and maintaining a successful colony, have not yet been announced.

To accompany the game’s reveal, Paradox Interactive released a short trailer, showcasing some of the ideas of the title, along with a little bit of humour:

Surviving Mars is being developed by Haemimont Games, whose most recent title is Victor Vran, though the team has also previously worked on the last three entries of the Tropico series and numerous other city and empire management games since beginning in 2000.

Similarly, Paradox Interactive has made a name for itself by publishing a number of similar titles, including Europa Universalis and Cities: Skylines, ensuring that the developers have an experienced eye to oversee production.

Surviving Mars is currently scheduled for release on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One some time in 2018. Before then, however, another extraterrestrial colony-building game called Aven Colony is set to launch on PC.
