Castlevania‘s spiritual successor Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is no longer scheduled for release on Mac or Linux operating systems.
“Bloodstained will no longer be supported on Mac and Linux. We have made this tough decision due to challenges of supporting middleware and online feature support and making sure we deliver on the rest of the scope for the game. We will be offering backers who planned to play the game on Mac and Linux the option to change the platform of their order.”
For anyone unfamiliar with the concept of middleware, it is software that creates a bridge between the operating system and applications, allowing data to be passed between them. Due to the architectural differences of operating systems, conforming to or building middleware can be one of a game’s most challenging developmental steps when being ported to multiple platforms.
Despite breaking this unfortunate news, Iga made clear that development is continuing. He stated, “Development has reached its peak—we are currently checking the performance of Bloodstained on each platform. Overall, we are done with enemy placement and entering the adjustment phase. But, there are still many progression-blocking bugs that must be taken care of.”
The update closed out on a much lighter note—or is it darker? Iga showed off concept art for a new enemy: a demon fish called Forneus.
Backers of the project seem overall disappointed with the news, highlighting their frustrations with how the game’s Vita version was also canceled at an earlier date in the comments.
Despite the setback and repeated delays, Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night remains one of the most anticipated metroidvania games of 2019. The project is now set to release on the PlayStation 4, Switch, Windows, and Xbox One.
