With the annual Gamescom conference just around the corner, a German magazine has let the proverbial monster out of the bag, leaking a new game from THQ Nordic, titled Biomutant.

A post on Reddit linked to a tweet displaying a photo of a magazine page, upon which a strange creature stands armed and armored, appearing for all the world an amalgamation of fox, cat, and raccoon. With a sword over one shoulder and an ammunition belt slung around its chest, the beast stands in front of a lush jungle setting. Text emblazoned beneath bills the game as a “post-apocalyptic kung-fu fable,” and several screenshots show the creature traveling over water and through the forest, as well as using some sort of construct to fly through the air.

Biomutant appears to be a product of Experiment 101, or X101, a new independent studio based in Stockholm, Sweden. A small studio of multi-disciplined developers, Experiment 101 was co-founded in 2015 by the Goodbye Kansas Entertainment group and veteran game developer Stefan Ljungqvist (Mad Max, Just Cause 3). Ljungqvist recently made a comment on LinkedIn that stated X101 would demo its first title at Gamescom, calling it “an open-world action RPG not like anything you’ve seen or played before.”

The magazine ad shows logos for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One consoles, and states the game will release in 2018. In addition, German players may preorder Biomutant by directing purchase inquiries to two phone numbers provided. More details about the game are expected to arrive in the next few days.
