With Infinity Ward teasing the next Call of Duty, EA has made sure no one forgets about their own big military franchise by launching a countdown website. Ending at 4 p.m. on May 6, the countdown promises the “first look at the future of Battlefield”.

Back in February, a German retail listing found by Liam Robertson (@Doctor_Cupcakes) suggested that Battlefield 5 would be a tactical shooter set during WWI. The site has since been modified to remove the WWI reference and specific release date.

The fifth game in the series has been official for nearly two years, and the developer DICE has been teasing the first current-gen-only entry since before the release of Battlefield 4 in 2013.

In November 2014, Gamespot reported that EA CFO Blake Jorgensen had seen the game running and it was a “fun, new Battlefield”. At the 2014 UBS Global Technology Conference, he said of the game, “[it] will be a return to a Battlefield military-style game.”

On its face, a World War I setting may not represent the “future” of Battlefield‘s popular military style, and seems unlikely to return to the fun of the series’ World War II entries. At the same time, the last two core titles in the series have suffered from underwhelming single-player campaigns. A World War I setting might be an opportunity to change this, offering different gameplay mechanics and a deeper, more serious story.
