Following the brief glimpse of Anthem shown at EA Play, Microsoft unveiled the first gameplay trailer for Bioware’s Anthem at its E3 2017 conference, opening up the world to players for the first time.
Having dropped a teaser trailer at pre-E3 press conference, this new trailer provides an in-depth look at the beautiful world and varied inhabitants of Anthem:
The footage shows that players are able to fly up in the air as well as travelling under water, allowing players to exploit environmental verticality to flank or sneak past enemies. A number of special combat moves were also shown off, such as mortar blast and a multi-missile attack that can wipe out a dozen enemies at once.
While ostensibly a shared-world experience, BioWare Lead Designer Corey Gaspur took to Twitter following the initial showing to emphasise that Anthem that can be enjoyed as either a multiplayer or single-player experience:
Yes of course! The game is designed so you can enjoy an amazing BioWare story and explore an incredible open world alone or with friends.

The story should be one of the game’s strong suits, given that BioWare, the developers behind acclaimed story-driven games Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and the original Mass Effect, are behind Anthem‘s development.
No release date has yet been announced, but Anthem will be available on PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4 sometime in 2018.
