Afterparty, the upcoming drinking adventure set in hell, builds upon ideas of what the afterlife is to bring out the human aspects of its insane cast of characters.

In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Night School Studio talked about the idea of creating a hell that encompasses multiple ideologies to avoid any outright religious rhetoric. Instead, the setting is used as a tool to humanize the cast of Afterparty.

The main duo, Lola and Milo, work as one and have to outdrink Satan himself to be freed from their newfound, torturous afterlife. With no memory of their less-than-ideal personalities while alive, nor the reason for being in hell, they are led to learn more about themselves and each other, changing the relationship the two lifelong friends have throughout the game.

Instead of weapons or magic, players will be drinking—a lot—with certain beverages acting like potions by boosting traits or allowing more choices to be made. The idea behind these potion-esque drinks is to dig deeper into what the characters are capable of, but also to create choices that are fun and creative for the player.

While the game sounds like a heavy story that might hit people in an emotional way, the developer of Afterparty is taking a light-hearted and funny approach, using over-the-top characters and an “R-rated Pixar world.”

The title was originally announced during E3 in 2018 and is now set to launch October 29 on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, with a Switch release coming at a later date.
