A Fold Apart

The freshly revealed A Fold Apart is a novel 2D platformer recreating the story of the long distance relationship of one of development team’s co-founders.

After launching a Fig crowdfunding campaign earlier today, the charming title has already raised almost USD$3,000 of $45,000 funding goal with 30 days remaining in the campaign at the time of writing.

One of the key draws of the project is its novel mechanics, which requires players to manipulate the paper-based world through flipping and folding to power progression. At present, these core mechanics are fairly straightforward, but the team aims to expand upon them with diagonal folds, page rotation, and gravity effects.

Meanwhile, the story is based on the real-life woes of developer Lightning Rod Games’s co-founder Mark Laframboise and his now-wife Robyn. The characters in A Fold Apart are separated as a result of their career choices, and the main challenges in the game arise from trying to find solutions to the emotional pitfalls that arise as a result of miscommunication.

The game has already been nominated as a finalist of the Ubisoft Indie Series in 2017 and 2018 and received a number of other plaudits from both the press and industry bodies. Members of the team have previously worked at Disney Interactive, EA and Ubisoft, bringing with them a wealth of experience.

A Fold Apart is tentatively targeting a Valentine’s Day 2019 release date on PC, PlayStation 4, Switch, and Xbox One.
